Mtskheta & Stepantsminda Tour

The day begins with a visit to Jvari monastery (a 20-minute drive from Tbilisi), which dates from the sixth century. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a breathtaking view of the town of Mtskheta. Following the Jvari church, we drive to the north of Georgia and arrive at Ananuri, a medieval fortified complex with views of the Zhinvali reservoir. Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is reached after driving through the Gudauri ski resort and the Jvari pass (2395 m). After lunch at a local restaurant, we can walk or drive up to the Trinity Church of Gergeti, which dates back to the 14th century. After seeing the monastery and admiring the beautiful views of Georgia’s third highest peak, Kazbeg 5054 meters above sea level leaves town. On our way back, we stop in Mtskheta, a 3000-year-old town that served as the first capital of the eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia. In Mtskheta, we visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. After viewing the church, we have time to buy souvenirs before driving back to Tbilisi.

The next sight is the Bodbe Nunnery, which contains the grave of St. Nino, a lady who preached Christianity in the early fourth century and converted Georgia. After visiting the nunnery and the local workshop where locally produced handicrafts are sold, we continue to Sighnaghi, a beautiful city known as the city of love, located on a hill and surrounded by a defensive wall built by one of Georgia’s greatest kings, Erekle II, in the 18th century.
