Mtskheta, Gori & Uplistsikhe

We begin the day with a visit to the sixth-century Jvari monastery. a UNESCO World Heritage Site with breathtaking views of Mtskheta town. We go 50 minutes to Gori, a city in central Georgia, after seeing the Jvari church. Despite being one of Georgia’s oldest towns, Gori is well-known worldwide for being Joseph Stalin’s birthplace.  An optional tour to the Stalin’s Museum, which is his original home. We go on to Uplistsikhe, which is one of Georgia’s oldest cities, having been inhabited since the 7th century BC. Situated in the center of the nation and along the renowned Silk Road, it became a significant hub for trade and politics in Georgia. It was also the center of paganism. We visit this fascinating cave village for an hour. We eat lunch (optional visit to a nearby organic winery serving organic food and wine) after our visit to Uplistsikhe. We stopped at Mtskheta, the 3000 year old town that served as the first capital of the Iberian kingdom in eastern Georgia, on the way back to Tbilisi. We go to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, which is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend some time shopping for mementos after touring the church and then head back to Tbilisi.

Kahketi region wine tour, Ikalto and Alaverdi monasteries

We drive from Tbilisi to the Kakheti region via the Gombori Pass. Kakheti is the most important winemaking region, distinguished by its own vine grape varietals, extraordinarily excellent climate and geography, and centuries of exceptional wine-making expertise. Our first stop will be the medieval Ikalto monastery and academy complex. After Ikalto, we visit the Alaverdi monastery, where monks still make wine in Kvevri (traditional Georgian wine jars) in the wine cellar, which was created in the eleventh century. From Alaverdi, we drive to Gremi, which was the capital of the Kakheti area in the 15th and 17th centuries. There, we shall witness the town’s remnants as well as the 16th-century Archangels Church. The next stop is the village of Zemo Alvani, followed by a wine tasting and lunch at a small natural winery before returning to Tbilisi.
