Vartavar, one of the most favorite Armenian traditional holidays, is another Christian feast with roots from the pagan times. It is a summer holiday with movable date. Celebrating the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, it is one of the five cardinal holidays of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Besides, Vardavar is a much-awaited feast celebrated with great folk traditions, such as watering everyone in the streets. It was a general understanding that newly harvested apple should not be eaten before Vardavar. In addition, it was also one of the first festivals associated with the harvest, and its rites were dedicated to the gods of good harvest. Since 2014, Vardavar International Festival is being organized in Geghard and Garni on the initiative of the Federation of Youth Clubs of Armenia.
