Dmanisi and Bolnisi Day Tour
Dmanisi and Bolnisi day Tour From Tbilisi, we drive to the Kvemo Kartli Region . Our first stop will be the city of Bolnisi . We will visit the German quarter and witness remarkable residences built by Germans. The Katharinenfeld colony in Bolnisi was created in 1818 by 95 German colonist families from Swabia. After the Red Army took over in 1921, it was renamed Luxemburg in honor of German communist Rosa Luxemburg. In 1941, all German descendants who were not married to Georgians were exiled to Siberia or Kazakhstan. Bolnisi retains vestiges of its German history. A modest graveyard with a monument commemorates the village’s German heritage. Mill Street is a modest street with 19th-century German architecture and a few signs in German from the early twentieth century. In 1944, the town was renamed Bolnisi. The economy is primarily agricultural, with the notable exception of a winery, brewery, and gold mine in the nearby settlement of Kazreti. The Bolnisi Sioni church , erected in the fifth century, is Georgia’s oldest extant church edifice. This church is notable for its inscriptions in Georgian Asomtavruli script from 494 AD. After Bolnisi sioni church, we will visit the lovely Tsughrughasheni church . Built during the early half of the thirteenth century. It is richly decorated with Georgian traditional embellishments. Then we stop for lunch at either a local restaurant that used to be a German mill or a local family who makes kvevri wine in the old German cellar. After Bolnisi, we drive to Dmanisi to see an archeological site where archaeologists discovered human bones dating back 1.8 million years. These are the oldest human remains ever discovered outside of Africa. We will also view the ruins of the 9th century town of Dmanisi, as well as a 7th-century local church. Drive back to Tbilisi.
