Kakheti Day Trip. We drive from Tbilisi to the Kakheti region via the Gombori Pass. Kakheti is the most important winemaking region, distinguished by its own vine grape varietals, extraordinarily excellent climate and geography, and centuries of exceptional wine-making expertise. Our first stop will be the medieval Ikalto Monastery and academy complex. After Ikalto, we visit the Alaverdi Monastery, where Monks still make Wine in Kvevri (traditional Georgian wine jars) in the wine cellar, which was created in the eleventh century. From Alaverdi, we drive to Gremi, which was the capital of the Kakheti area in the 15th and 17th centuries. There, we shall witness the town’s remnants as well as the 16th-century Archangels Church. The next stop is the village of Zemo Alvani, followed by a wine tasting and lunch at a small natural winery before returning to Tbilisi.
