Alaverdi Monastery was founded in the VI century by Joseph Alaverdeli, one of the 12 Assyrian fathers. It is located in the Alazani valley, 20 km away from Telavi. In the first quarter of the XI century the king of Kakheti: Kvirike, built the temple of St.George on the place of the old, little church. It is more than 50 meters high and one of the largest cathedrals in the country.
