Etchmiadzin is the 4th largest city in Armenia. Before 1945, it was called Vagharshapat. Nowadays, the city is best known as the spiritual; and administrative center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, with the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the Cathedral. In Etchmiadzin, there are the St. Gayane and St. Hripsime Churches of 7th century, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
